What Should I Consider When Hiring an Immigration Lawyer?

What should I consider when hiring an immigration lawyer?

The outcome of an immigration process can have a huge impact on individuals and their families. There are many attorneys out there, but not everyone is adequately prepared to handle your immigration matter. This checklist will help you ensure that you are asking the right questions at your first appointment and when making the decision to hire someone to represent you in such an important process.

  1. Do you have a valid license to practice law? Make sure you are a licensed attorney and not a paralegal, legal assistant, notary public, or administrator.

  2. What payment methods do you offer? Do you accept cards, checks, cash, transfers or do you have payment plans?

  3. What is their communication policy? Find out what access you will have to the attorney you are hiring and the methods of communication.

  4. Does my lawyer understand me? Find out if the lawyer speaks your language or if he or she will use interpreters to communicate with you.

  5. What are the fees? Make sure that the fees to be paid to the attorney are described in detail in a Contract and that you understand each part of this Contract.
